Mexicana Air suspends all flights

Mexicana Airlines continues to struggle with the downturn in passenger numbers as it announced that all flights were suspended from midnight this morning (28th August 2010). This means that no more flights will be leaving Gatwick Airport for Mexico.
This follows a turbulent time for the airline as the Mexican government states no more public funds will be made available. A few weeks ago Mexicana filed for bankruptcy protection after 2 of it’s aircraft were seized in Canada following non-payment of lease. The airline and it’s investors have been trying to negotiate with the unions a series of cost cutting measures for the last few weeks. The talks have broken down with the result that the airline and authorities have suspended all operations. Since the filing for protection Mexicana Airlines have been concentrating on getting passengers homes to ensure no people would be left stranded.
A new group of investors who took over a large part of the airline last week wanted to reduce the number of cabin crew to a quarter of currently employed and while the unions were prepared to accept flexible working they refused to accept job losses and pay cuts.
This news follows on from another airline now encountering trouble. Air Arann of Ireland has applied for bankruptcy protection n order to rearrange it’s financing and restructure it’s business. The airline will continue to provide flights as normal during the period of restructuring and seeking of additional investors.
As we know head out of peak holiday traveling season and into a traditionally quiet 2 months before the Christmas getaway we may see a number of other airlines and holiday companies announce the need to seek bankruptcy protection and restructuring. Air travel in the business market at least appears to be regaining strength in some parts of the world but has it come too late for many of the weaker companies. The next 2 months will determine that.
In the mean time FlightCabs are ready to rearrange our airport transfers to Gatwick Airport for those Mexicana Airlines passengers who will need to be rebooked onto other flights.

Following a short suspension, the Gatwick to Mexico flights have now been re-activated according to Mexicana Airways.
It may be the holiday season and peak travel season but there’s still no reduction of pressure on airlines. The latest airline to run into financial difficulties is the Mexican national carrier Mexicana Airways. It filed for bankruptcy protection in the US last week in order to protect it’s US based assets while it undergoes restructuring. Part of that restructuring is the cancellation of it’s 4 times a week direct flight to Mexico from Gatwick which began in 2008. The airline has stated that it now aims to concentrate it’s resources on homebound passengers.
The bankruptcy petition states the airline has debts of over £600 million. While it has undertaken major cost cutting over recent months it has still not been able to bring down the costs sufficiently to remain viable. One of it’s biggest costs is it’s flight and cabin crew. The airline states it pilots earn 185% more than pilot working for low cost airlines in Mexico and it’s cabin crew earn more than 35% more than comparative US based cabin crew. In order to stave of closure of the airline it has put forward 2 options to the pilots and crew unions.
- a cut of 40% in salary and a loss of 700 jobs
- to offer to sell the company to the union for a token amount of $1
The unions are expected to reject both offers but the company has said it is still willing to negotiate.
Passengers who have booked with Mexicana Airways are being rebooked on to other airlines for their flights. Mexican is a member of the Oneworld group and other major airlines will be able to provide their flights for them with minimal disruption and delays.
